Growing up, I was the fat kid. I had the jellyrolls, the heavy breathing, the extra Twinkies in my backpack. Was it fun? Absolutely, I had the chance to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. My parents wanted to give their children the world, but looking back on it, it felt like they wanted to give me Type II Diabetes. What made matters worse was that I hated exercise too, so eating an enormous amount of unhealthy food with a non-existent workout regimen just made matters worse.
By the time high school came around, I was at my heaviest; 330 pounds of pure, uncut fat that made the ladies swoon. I justified my weight at the time with playing football, but once I decided to stop playing, I realized that I didn’t want to be that obese anymore and look into having a healthier, active lifestyle. However, I know the days of binge eating junk food would need to stop in order for this new lifestyle to begin.
After doing some Google research and reading some books, I decided to eat cleaner, start a beginner workout regimen and track my calories. After 6 months, I looked like an entirely different person from what I once was. I had dropped 130 pounds and started to feel more confident than ever! My energy was through the roof and I could have only imagined if I would have begun sooner!
During the process of this new lifestyle, I had to overcome a lot of obstacles. The main one was my eating habits. We all want to enjoy the delicious food that the Lord has blessed us with, but a lot of it isn’t good for our bodies. It was a tough seeing my friends, family, strangers eating pizza, burgers, sushi, what have you, but I always had to remind myself what my end goal was when I started this new lifestyle. If I ever forgot about that end goal, then it wasn’t going to happen. Towards the end of those 6 months, everything was a bit easier from when I began. The biggest quote that helped me was “it takes 21 days to create a habit, it takes 90 days to create a lifestyle”.
